Coping With Emotional Harassment

Physical bullying is physical assault and leaves physical marks, while, emotional bullying leaves invisible psychological wounds. Emotional abuse comes in the form of constant blunt, harsh, and destructive criticism. It is a direct attack to one’s self-esteem. Whether the criticism is true or not, it still leaves a deep-rooted mark in one’s emotion. It is so easy to react with resentment and anger, but in doing so, makes someone more vulnerable to the critic. Emotional wound really hurts, perhaps more hurting than physical wound. If you receive unfair emotional bullying, try to be calm, be cool and try to take it positively. This is never easy, but it can be done. The wound created will heal faster.

Remember, “ang isang puno ay binabato dahil hitik ito sa bunga” - an abundant fruit bearing tree is targeted with stones (this is the best translation I can make without losing the meaning of the saying). The greatest MAN who lived on this earth was bitterly criticized and then crucified because of HIS convictions and beliefs. When you are emotionally harassed, examine the qualifications of your critic. Is he sincere and trustworthy? If so, examine his accusations and try not to dismiss them readily. On the other hand, has he the reason to be envious and malicious? Then you can ignore them. Silence with dignity is often the best thing to do against insult. Of course there are times when the criticism is false and damaging, you have to reply to it. If you are on the verge to do this type of emotional bullying yourself due to anger, stay cool for a moment, wait until your anger subsides, then act positively, state the facts and not to retaliate. Wait for the right moment to act. It is but normal to blurt out harsh, damaging words in retaliation, but after a while, when we really deeply think about what we said, we feel sorry. I have fallen in this pitfall many times and often, I felt sorry; doing the above often lead to positive results.

Critics who constantly find faults from others are often warped and unhappy people. They try to cover up their own inadequacies by pointing out failings of others and hang on to false substance. When you face this hostility in another person, try to be behind this anger, try to understand what causes it, and try to remove the cause of this anger. Again, this is not easy but it can be done.

Your best defense against emotional harassment is your own personal conduct. Keep your standards high and have a clear conscience.

NOTE: This is an attachment sent to me via email by one of my friends in the US. I was thinking of writing about this subject for quite sometime but I don't know how to start it. And now, thanks for the person who wrote this, I am sharing this with you.

"Senator Defensor Santiago was featured in the Correspondents sometime ago.

Maganda rin naman ang naidulot ng pagiging prangka ni Senador Miriam Defensor Santiago. Ayon kay Santiago, marami ang tumatakbong Senador dahil sa laki ng budget na ibinibigay sa kanila kada buwan.

Lumalabas na P 35,000 na suweldo nila kada buwan ay pakitang-tao lang sa milyun-milyong budget ng bawat senador… Kada buwan ay may Fixed Monthly Budget ang bawat Senador ng humigit-kumulang na P2 Milyon.

Sa opisina pa lang nila ay humigit-kumulang P500,000 ang budget nila sa Maintenance and Operating Expenses (Rental, Utilities, Supplies at Domestic Travels) at P500,000 para sa Staff at Personal expenses. Kaya para makatipid ang ibang Senador, kaunti lang ang staff na kinukuha nila. Nagtataka ka pa ba kung bakit mayroong mga Ghost Employees?

Bukod diyan, may P760,000 allowance pa sila kada buwan para naman sa Foreign Travel. At ang masakit pa nito, hindi na kailangang i-liquidate ang mga resibo ng mga gastusing iyan kundi Certification lang ang requirement.

Heto pa, lahat sila ay Chairman ng mg Komite sa Senado. Ang Committee Chairman ay tumatanggap din ng budget na sinlaki ng tinatanggap ng mga Senador na humigit-kumulang P1 Milyon din! Hindi sila mawawalan ng Komite dahil 24 lang ang ating mga Senador at 37 naman ang Committee sa Senado. There's food for everybody 'ika nga! Lumalabas na doble ang kanilang benepisyo at kita kapag sila ay nabiyayaan ng Committee Chairmanship.

Sa P200 milyon na Budget para sa Pork Barrel ng mga Senador bawat taon, awtomatikong may 10% na S.O.P. o kita ng Senador na P20 milyon. Ito ang porsiyento na ibinibigay ng mga kontratista sa mga Senador na nagbibigay sa kanila ng mga Infrasture at Livelihood Projects.

Bago matapos ang termino ng isang Senador, kumita na siya ng P100 milyon sa Pork Barrel pa lang. Yung ibang Senador mas gahaman, hindi lang 10% kundi 20 - 30% ang komisyong hinihingi sa mga kontratista.

Pansinin niyo na lang ang pagbabago ng buhay ng ilan sa ating mga Senador simula nang manungkulan sa puwesto. Kung dati ay simple lang ang kanilang pamumuhay ngayon ay nakatira na sila sa mga eksklusibong subdivision, maraming bahay sa Pilipinas at abroad at mahigit sa lima ang mga sasakyan.

Ngayon nagtataka ka pa ba kung bakit gumagastos ng daan-daang milyong piso ang mga Senador sa kampanya para sa isang posisyon na P35,000 lang ang suweldo kada buwan? Bawing-bawi pala ang mga gastos kapag naupo na!

One of the reasons why the Philippines will never, ever get off the ground......ayon...... kaya talagang mahirap pang umasenso ang bansang Pilipinas - iyung kanila mismong gobierno ninanakawan and kanilang kapuwa taong pilipino, at hindi pa iyan..... hindi pa sila nagbabayad ng buwis sa bansa - kaya lahat ng kalyehon lubak-lubak at masyadong madumi at mababaho!!! We should be thankful to Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago for being fair dinkum and honest about this - for exposing these people - that is what the country needs - whistleblowers - if there are no whistleblowers the country will never ever prosper and will just sit in the sidelines watching with envy the prosperity of the other southeast asian countries - look at Vietnam now, much better.......while the rest of the new breed of filipinas are just maids - the present level of education has also deteriorated in the country - whether it be Ateneo, UP, La Salle – some of the graduates can not compete anymore - they do not know how to use their education to better up their poor country, they prefer to steal and not to assist in the path of prosperity for their country - they lack human factor and social conscience and no social responsibility....the result of a poor level of education. so wake up, you filipinos paying your taxes there, stop defending your corrupt masters and do something!!!!! we all feel so sorry for you...."

Knowing the Moment

Almost everybody has experienced uttering harsh sarcastic words against somebody when losing temper but afterwards regretted saying those words. How we wish to bring back that moment so that we can correct what we had said or take control of ourselves and just kept silent. Or, how we wish that we said “I Love You”, to the other person or hugged him or said some kindly words more often at the right moment, but no, that person is already gone, we cannot bring him back at that moment. Knowing the moment when to act or not to act, to speak or to keep silent is a virtue we must learn. When the right moment comes, we should act before it goes away.

People are often discouraged when repeatedly met with failures. What we almost never realize is that time and again we are making the right effort but at the wrong moment. We have to have patience. Any premature action can often spoil everything.

How often are we confronted with angry, scornful or ungrateful responses from persons we wish well when giving advices during the low moments of their lives. When everyone’s threshold of irritability is low, when a person can’t stand criticism or good advice, wait for the right moment to speak.

What is more annoying than to be interrupted in mid-anecdote? When a person is talking wait for the right moment to interject the views of your own. Interrupting a speaker often leaves the speaker hanging uncomfortably in mid-sentence and put the train of conversation off the track. And often times, this leads to undesirable arguments.

When we feel anger, fear, hurt, jealousy or resentment we should never act or to speak. As Aristotle once said, “To be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, at the right time, and for the right purpose and in the right way is not easy”. Wait till our emotion has cooled down, then that is the right moment to act.

It is with great pleasure to announce to all that another 3 of our scholars graduated from TUP last March 27, 2008 bringing the total number of our graduates to 15. This was made possible through your unending and benevolent support to the Scholarship Foundation. This school year 2008-2009, we have added another 4 very poor but bright youngsters to the program of the Foundation all to enroll in Education at Cavite State University. Our 43rd Anniversary Homecoming

The 43rd Anniversary Homecoming celebration of Cavite National High School Class of 1965 officially kicked off last February 14, 2008 as a welcome party for the "balikbayans" cum Valentine's party at the rest house of Dante Salud in Kawit, Cavite. The homecoming activities were graced by a modest number of "balikbayans" from the United Kingdom, Germany, and the USA. Again, humbly we say, the reunion was a success.

An early morning mass was officiated by our classmate Fr. Teddy Villanueva at the Ladislao Diwa Elementary School on February 16, 2008. After the mass, a jubilant class 65 alumni assembled for a parade along the main streets of Cavite City which ended at the Montano Hall of our Alma Mater. The reunion culminated with a dinner-dance at the Chua's Pavillion in Dalahican, Cavite City.

I finally uploaded and embedded in our webpage the videos of our last Ruby Anniversary Celebration. We can now share to those who missed the momentous occasion the events of the homecoming in moving picture. The videos were filmed by Milo Reynante (better-half of Nini Austria), Nene Simpelo and Josie Reyes. All the 3 films were compiled, edited and transferred into DVD by Ernie Flores of which I was one of the lucky recipients.
